October 13 event moves to Mateo Camargo Park; Hometown Musician's Life To Be Celebrated with Music, Fireworks, and More on San Antonio's Historic West Side
SAN ANTONIO—Sunday, October 13 will be a day set aside in San Antonio to celebrate the life and music of Doug Sahm, one of the Alamo City's most gifted musical sons. The site for the event has been moved to historic Mateo Camargo Park (5500 Castroville) on San Antonio's West Side. The event was previously scheduled for Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium, home of the San Antonio Missions.
"We want Doug Sahm Day to become an annual event," said show organizer Lucky Tomblin, of Austin's SilverStar Entertainment company. "The San Antonio Missions' organization was wonderful to work with. But upon reflection, we decided it would be better to grow Doug Sahm Day naturally to the point where holding it in the Missions' stadium made logical sense. We like the idea of starting it out in a beautiful park in the middle of a neighborhood, and we think Doug would have liked it too. We anticipate that this event will become increasingly popular, not only with San Antonio citizens, but with Doug Sahm fans all over Texas and the U.S., and overseas."
Sponsors for Doug Sahm Day are still being actively sought. Interested parties can contact Milam & Co., 512-472-3444.
Gates will open at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13 at Camargo Park. Tickets for the event will be sold at the door. Beer, water, soft drinks, and barbecue will be available for sale on the site. No coolers, picnic baskets or ice chests will be allowed inside.
The musical lineup for Doug Sahm Day will include performances by Little Joe y la Familia, Augie Meyers (Doug's partner in the Sir Douglas Quintet and the Texas Tornados), Angela Strehli, Lucky 13, featuring Lucky Tomblin and the West Side Horns, Shawn and Shandon Sahm (Doug's sons), and the S.A. Groovers, with more performers to be announced. The show will also include a fireworks display and other family-friendly events. Talks are in the final stage for a major-label, nationally acclaimed act to be added to the bill in the immediate future.
Profits from ticket sales at the Doug Sahm Day concert will benefit the music education program of Edgewood Academy, and the Police Athletic League (PALS) of the San Antonio Police Department.
On August 22, Mayor Ed Garza proclaimed October 13, 2002 as Doug Sahm Day in San Antonio. "Doug Sahm was a San Antonio native son, and one of the most gifted, eclectic and influential musicians the State of Texas has ever produced," said Mayor Garza. "It is entirely appropriate that his hometown take a day to honor his memory and his contributions not only to San Antonio, but to American music overall." Mayor Garza added that he hopes the event will become an annual affair, drawing Doug Sahm fans from all over the country and overseas.
Born on San Antonio's East Side in 1941, Doug spent his life celebrating all the diverse roots and branches of Texas music. Primarily through two influential bands two decades apart, the Sir Douglas Quintet and the Texas Tornados, he helped share his musical love affair with the world. Doug passed away in Taos, NM in 1999.
